Kurawaka - Christchurch Birthing Unit

Kurawaka: Waipapa is a central city primary birthing unit in Christchurch, opened in April 2024 to provide a calm, supportive environment for low-risk births.

The goal of this project was to create a space that felt safe, nurturing, and homely, while still meeting the operational and clinical requirements of a healthcare environment.

A key focus was ensuring the furniture design reflected:

·         Comfort and wellbeing for mothers and whānau

·         Cultural awareness and sensitivity

·         Practicality and durability for day-to-day use

BFG worked closely with stakeholders to ensure every furniture element aligned with both the functional and cultural intent of the space.

Each piece was carefully selected and, where required, customised to suit the environment. Our approach included:

·         Prioritising comfort and support across all furniture selections

·         Customising finishes, forms, and materials to suit the design vision

·         Selecting fabrics, healthcare-grade vinyls, and paint finishes that created a warm, residential feel

·         Ensuring all materials met the necessary durability and hygiene requirements

·         Balancing clinical performance with a softer, more residential aesthetic was central to achieving the desired outcome.

 

The completed Kurawaka Birthing Unit provides a welcoming, calming environment that supports positive birthing experiences.

The space successfully delivers:

·         A home-like atmosphere that helps put mothers and whānau at ease

·         Thoughtfully designed furniture that enhances comfort and usability

·         A cohesive environment that reflects both cultural values and modern healthcare standards

The result is a space that feels considered, respectful, and supportive—contributing to a high-quality care experience
